12 illegal miners arrested in Nigeria

12 suspects have been arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for illegally conveying solid minerals from Kaduna State and Plateau to Port Harcourt in Rivers without the relevant permits.
Mr Samuel Dan, NSCDC Commandant in Edo confirmed the report and said the suspects were found to be transporting solid minerals such as conza stones, iron ore, and coal in four trucks without proper waybills or licenses permitting them to engage in mining activities.
Curbing illegal mining
Mr Samuel explained that dealing in solid minerals requires a permit and approval from the government, specifically the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals, before being allowed to operate a mining site. He further highlighted the significance of mining as a source of revenue for the Nigerian government and stated that illegal mining and trading of solid minerals would defraud the government of potential income. To curb such illegal activities, the NSCDC impounded the vehicles involved in the illegal transport of minerals. An ongoing investigation is taking place, and the suspects have been given the opportunity to present their permits and licenses to prove their legitimacy.
The NSCDC is taking steps to ensure the prevention of criminal activities, particularly those aimed at depriving citizens of their property and lives, and is calling for stronger government regulations to control the possession and use of potentially dangerous materials like weapons of mass destruction. The Commandant noted that mining, construction, and medical fields have been associated with approximately 22,000 weapons of mass destruction, emphasizing the need for proper control and regulation by the government.
