Tragedy strikes at Sibanye Stillwater as two workers lose their lives in inspection accident
In a stark reminder of the mining industry's dangers, two workers tragically died during a routine inspection at Sibanye Stillwater's Kloof 8 shaft
In a sobering reminder of the inherent dangers of the mining sector, two workers tragically lost their lives at Sibanye Stillwater’s Kloof 8 shaft (K8/Masimthembe) near Glenharvie in Westonaria on Sunday, May 3. The incident occurred during a routine, scheduled shaft inspection, a task often considered commonplace in the high-risk mining environment.
As the inspection team was preparing to carry out their duties, a critical failure took place: the inspection platform unexpectedly detached from the main winder conveyance. This unforeseen malfunction caused the platform to plummet down the shaft uncontrollably, resulting in the fatal injuries sustained by the two contractor employees. Such tragic incidents, while not uncommon in the mining industry, continue to evoke profound shock and grief within the community.
The safety of employees remains a top priority, and this tragic occurrence has prompted reflection on the importance of rigorous safety measures. Companies operating in the sector are urged to ensure that all equipment used during operations is sufficiently robust to prevent such devastating accidents.
In response to this tragedy, the Board and management of Sibanye Stillwater have expressed their deepest sympathies and are offering counselling to the friends and family of the deceased workers.
“A full investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway, and in line with regulatory requirements, all relevant stakeholders, including organised labour and the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, have been notified. This tragic incident did not cause damage to the shaft infrastructure; however, shaft operations have been halted while investigations are ongoing,” stated Sibanye.
As the investigation continues, both the mining community and the nation will closely monitor the results. Everyone hopes for a comprehensive review that will lead to enhanced safety protocols and equipment standards in an industry that frequently experiences tragic losses.
