Mkomati nickel mine poised for revival after ARM and Boliden reached preliminary agreement
Mkomati mine may rise from the ashes as ARM aims to partner with Boliden for restart
In a potential development for South Africa’s mining landscape, the Mkomati nickel mine, located in Mpumalanga, may be reopening following its closure in 2021. African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), founded by prominent South African entrepreneur Patrice Motsepe, has reached a preliminary agreement with Swedish metals company Boliden Commercial AB to supply nickel concentrate from Mkomati to Boliden’s Harjavalta smelter in Finland. This partnership could see the mine resume operations, pending a few critical conditions.
According to reports from Discovery Arlet, while both ARM and Boliden have expressed intentions to move forward, a binding contract has yet to be established. Two pivotal conditions need to be met before the restart can take place:
- The ARM board must grant formal approval to proceed with the mine’s operations.
- Boliden must complete a responsible sourcing due diligence process that assesses Mkomati’s environmental management, labour standards, and governance frameworks.
If these conditions are satisfied, the reopening of Mkomati would mark a crucial step for ARM, allowing the company to directly engage in the clean energy supply chain. This move is in line with ARM’s explicit strategy of integrating sustainability into its business model, which could attract institutional investors seeking to align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.
This partnership signals a growing trend among diversified African miners who are actively redefining their legacy mineral assets in response to rising demands for clean energy solutions. With the global shift towards sustainability, such initiatives could be vital for attracting new categories of capital aimed at ESG-oriented projects.
As the world transitions to greener alternatives, the potential reopening of Mkomati not only promises economic rejuvenation in the region but also positions ARM and its partners to play a significant role in the evolving energy landscape.
