Bushveld Complex Holdings looks to bridge gap between mining and community development

The organisation aims to bring mining companies, government, traditional leaders and other stakeholders together to promote social development and greater participation in the PGM value chain

Bushveld Complex Holdings hosted its first media meet-and-greet on Friday, October 30, ahead of the PGMs Industry Night scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on November 28, 2026.

The evening will bring together stakeholders from across the platinum group metals (PGM) industry for leadership reflection, networking and recognition of social impact initiatives.

Speaking at the media engagement, Beverley Norris, Head of Business Development and Operations at Bushveld Complex Holdings, said the organisation’s aim is to engage with different stakeholders, including mining communities and industry leadership, to identify opportunities for social development.

“We want to bring everybody in one room and try and make sure that we add value for social development within the communities that the mines are currently in,” she said.

Norris said this was particularly important given that, despite South Africa being one of the world’s biggest platinum producers, many mining communities continued to experience poverty and poor living conditions.

She said the organisation wanted to help bridge this gap by bringing traditional leaders into the conversation, allowing them to represent the interests and concerns of communities affected by mining activities.

Some of the traditional leaders expected to attend the PGMs Industry Night include Mzilikazi, while confirmation from the Zulu Kingdom is still pending.

“We will have traditional leaders, they are the landowners, and then you have your government that is supposed to be governing the mines, and then you have corporate, that is supposed to be part of that communication, and part of that growth,” Norris said.

She added that the intention is to create a platform where these stakeholders could engage and contribute to discussions around community development and the mining industry’s role in creating sustainable opportunities.

Bringing the PGM industry together

Beyond community development, PGMs Industry Night 2026 is intended to strengthen connections across the broader PGM ecosystem, bringing together mining executives, government representatives, investors, suppliers, entrepreneurs and technology providers.

The event will also provide an opportunity to discuss issues affecting the industry’s future, including beneficiation, local supplier development, investment, innovation and greater participation by women and young people in the mining economy.

Bushveld Complex Holdings also intends to extend these engagements to Investing in African Mining Indaba 2027, with a proposed networking platform focused on building new industrial demand for PGMs.

PGMs Industry Night 2026 will take place on Saturday, November 28, from 6PM to 9PM in Johannesburg.
