Accident occurs at Ng’alita mine in Tanzania

An accident has occurred at Ng’alita mine in Bariadi district, Simiyu region, northern Tanzania. District commissioner Simon Simalenga confirmed the report and said the incident was as a result of a landslide.

The landslide which resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals, occurred when a group of people began mining in an area restricted due to heavy rains. Despite warnings and safety procedures issued by the government, the miners persisted in exploiting the mineral-rich region.

Illegal mining

District commissioner Simon Simalenga revealed that the group had started mining in the area about three weeks prior to the incident, and the regional mining officer had intervened, instructing them to stop until proper safety procedures were in place. Unfortunately, the tragedy unfolded before these measures could be fully enforced.

The country’s Head of State, Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her deep sorrow for the loss of lives, acknowledging that these individuals were small-scale miners attempting to earn a living for themselves and their families. The government had implemented safety measures and restrictions due to ongoing heavy rains, which had led to flash floods in the area.
