Kenya unveils comprehensive natural resources atlas

Kenya has developed an extensive atlas consolidating data on its critical natural resources. The effort reflects a commitment to effective management, decision-making, and conservation of the nation’s vital assets by centralizing relevant information.

The atlas provides a comprehensive compilation of data on Kenya’s natural resources. An online version of the atlas is accessible to the public, enhancing transparency and accessibility. The initiative aligns with the Third Medium Term Plan (2018-2022), identifying the development of the atlas and creation of natural resource databases as flagship projects.  The endeavor has been in progress for nearly six years.

Objectives of the Atlas

The National Land Commission (NLC) coordinated the development of the atlas. Collaboration involved various government bodies, academia, non-governmental organizations, and County Governments via the Council of Governors (COG). An inter-agency technical team known as the Natural Resources Atlas Multi-Agency Working Group played a role in the collaborative effort.

Objectives of the Atlas and Geoportal include; identifying and documenting natural resources throughout the country, providing access to information for the general public and decision-makers, supporting integrated and landscape-scale natural resource management.
