Harmony Gold records fatality at Mponeng Mine
The incident follows a seismic event at the West Rand operation, with work in the affected area suspended pending an investigation
South Africa’s Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited has recorded a death at its Mponeng Mine in the West Rand of Gauteng. It is reported that incident happened on September 14, following a seismic event in an underground working area.
The company has announced that work in the affected area has been suspended while a thorough investigation is conducted to determine the circumstances and identify any additional measures needed to strengthen safety controls and risk management practices.
“Harmony extends its sincere condolences to the employee’s family, friends and colleagues. Support is being provided to those affected. Harmony remains committed to improving safety across its operations through strengthening critical controls, training and development, learning from incidents and working in partnership with all our stakeholders to eliminate loss of life and create safer workplaces for all,” read the statement from the company.
They also said that the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources and other relevant stakeholders have been notified.
This is the second death this month in a mine owned by Harmony. On September 6, one person died at the Moab Khotsong mine, near Orkney. The latest Mponeng incident is 7th death recorded by Harmony this year.
