Chinese firms forms body for sustainable mining in Ghana

Several Chinese mining companies have come together to form a new industry body, the Association of China-Ghana Mining (ACGM), officially launched in Accra, Ghana. This initiative is intended to foster deeper partnerships between Chinese and Ghanaian stakeholders in the mining sector.
The association aims to promote responsible investment, encourage technological collaboration, and strengthen sustainable practices across the industry. Speaking at the launch, Ghana’s Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, welcomed the formation of the ACGM, emphasizing its potential to support Ghana’s goals for sustainable and inclusive growth in the mining sector.
Embracing modernisation
He noted that China’s strengths in areas such as underground mining and low-grade ore processing could be valuable assets to Ghana’s efforts to modernize and diversify its mineral extraction capabilities. The minister expressed interest in increased technical cooperation and knowledge sharing to improve operational efficiency and environmental performance in mining activities.
China’s Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, described the association as a critical platform for enhancing communication among government bodies, businesses, and local communities. He said the ACGM would help Chinese enterprises align more closely with local needs and contribute positively to Ghana’s economic development. The ambassador also encouraged member companies to focus on creating local employment opportunities, boosting in-country mineral value addition, and supporting community welfare.
President of the ACGM, Tang Zhenjiang, expressed the association’s commitment to promoting mutual benefits for both Chinese investors and Ghanaian partners. He announced the creation of a special fund dedicated to advancing education, social welfare, environmental sustainability, and community development initiatives in Ghana, signaling a long-term commitment to inclusive growth and responsible business practices.
