Type IIa D-color 150-carat stone recovered at Lulo mine in Angola

A type IIa D-color 150-carat stone has been recovered at the Lulo mine in Angola.  Lucapa who made the discovery and noted that it is the 36th +100-carat diamond from the mine since it began commercial production in 2015.

Lucapa has a 40% stake in the Lulo mine, which hosts the world’s highest dollar-per-carat alluvial diamonds. The rest is held by Angola’s national diamond company (Endiama) and Rosas & Petalas, a private entity. The firm which also operates the Mothae mine, in Lesotho, has reported encouraging exploration results from its ongoing exploration program to discover the primary kimberlite source at Lulo.

Last year, the miner unearthed five stones of that scale from the deposit, three of them in September. They included a 113-carat, type IIa rough and diamonds of 131 and 160 carats. Separately, Lucapa recently retrieved 36 diamonds from a bulk sample of two kimberlite pipes at Lulo, with the largest stone weighing 2.38 carats. The ore is the highest grade the miner has recovered from a Lulo kimberlite sample to date.
