The Northern Cape province recently launched its inaugural Investment and Jobs Conference at the Mittah Seperepere International Convention Centre in Kimberley.
The three-day event brought together public sector leaders, industry experts, investors, and community stakeholders to unpack investment opportunities, address challenges, and outline a long-term vision for the industrialisation of the vast Northern Cape region.
Known for its rich mineral resources, including manganese, iron ore, and diamonds, the province placed strong emphasis on mining as a key thematic focus. Discussions explored how investors can further unlock and improve the sector.
The MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism in the Northern Cape, Venus Blennies, said the outcomes of the conference exceeded expectations. While the province had set a target of R60 billion in investment commitments, it secured an impressive R105 billion in pledged investments.
“Having engagements with the private sector and different stakeholders in the province, we really get a sense that everyone understands that the Northern Cape is really a place to be. We are excited that we’ve really exceeded the expectations that we have set for ourselves,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mulilo, a renewable energy developer and Independent Power Producer (IPP), is already advancing four projects in the Northern Cape, which are expected to reach commercial operation within the next year or so.
“We are currently under construction for three solar PV projects and one wind project. We are also building the main entrance sub-station, which is basically infrastructure that’s linked to these projects,” said Mulilo Chief Commercial Officer Seithati Bolipombo.
While mining remains a key investment driver in the province, industry leaders emphasised the importance of community inclusion. Mhlanganisi Madlongolwana, Anglo American Stakeholder Engagement Head, highlighted the critical role of local communities in sustaining mining operations.
“Anglo American is a globally competitive company, but ultimately, our roots are in South Africa. Through Kumba Iron Ore, very specifically, which operates in the Northern Cape. One is a reaffirmation of the fact that the Northern Cape is our home, and the people of the Northern Cape matter for the work that we do. But they are the ones that add value, and the communities we operate in.”
Following the success of the inaugural event, the Northern Cape Investment and Jobs Conference will now be held annually.
