Akobo Minerals Pauses Segele Mine Operations Amid Fuel Supply Disruptions

Diesel shortages linked to global supply constraints force temporary shutdown, with operations set to resume once supply stabilises

Scandinavian-based gold producer and explorer Akobo Minerals has announced the disruptions to its operations in Ethiopia.

A shortage of sufficient fuel has negatively impacted the Segele mine, forcing a temporary pause in operations.

“Disruptions in global fuel supply, including reduced tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, have constrained fuel availability in Ethiopia, which relies on imported diesel. Against this background, and as a precautionary measure, the company will temporarily scale back operations at Segele, while maintaining readiness to resume operations as soon as reliable diesel deliveries are restored. This measure is implemented in a structured and controlled manner,” reads a statement from Akobo.

As part of its strategy to restore operations, the company has ordered a diesel shipment expected to arrive on site in May. This delivery is anticipated to support operations until a more reliable fuel supply is secured.

Despite the disruption, Akobo confirmed that the situation does not affect its mineral resources, underground infrastructure, or long-term development plans for the Segele mine.
