Zimbabwe secures $300M lithium investment to power global EV supply chain

State-owned Mutapa Energy Resources partners with Chinese investors to expand Sandawana Mine, positioning Zimbabwe as a leading lithium hub

Zimbabwe’s mining sector is entering a new growth phase, driven by surging global demand for lithium, a critical mineral for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. State-owned Mutapa Energy Resources has secured $300 million in funding from several investors, including major Chinese firms, to expand operations at the Sandawana Mine in the country’s Midlands province.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Mutapa Energy Resources CEO Innocent Rukweza confirmed that “it is a done deal.” The investment will finance the development of large-scale processing facilities, enabling the company to extract up to 3 million tonnes of ore annually. Independent certification has already confirmed 39.9 million tonnes of lithium resources at Sandawana, with 72% classified as “measured,” the highest confidence level in resource estimation.

Chinese companies, including Sinomine Resource Group, Chengxin Lithium Group, Sichuan Yahua Industrial Group, and Huayou Cobalt, are playing a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s lithium expansion. These firms are investing heavily in beneficiation plants, aligning with Zimbabwe’s policy to ban raw lithium exports and encourage domestic value addition.

Zimbabwe’s government views lithium as a cornerstone of its industrialization agenda. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has described Sandawana Mine as a future “industrial hub,” with plans for a US$270 million lithium concentrate plant underway. The country has already attracted over US$3.4 billion in lithium investments, reinforcing its ambition to become a global leader in battery minerals.

Despite the optimism, the sector faces risks. Lithium prices have fallen sharply from $86,000 per tonne in 2022 to around $14,300 per tonne, raising concerns about long-term profitability. Transparency issues also remain, as some investor identities are undisclosed due to stock market regulations. Ensuring community benefits and sustainable practices will be critical to avoid resource exploitation concerns.

With vast reserves and strong investor interest, Zimbabwe is poised to become a top-tier global lithium supplier. The Sandawana Mine expansion highlights Africa’s growing role in the EV supply chain, but success will depend on balancing investor returns, community inclusion, and market stability.
