Zimbabwe aims to boost mining sector by creating 100,000 jobs

Zimbabwe's Vision 2030 seeks to expand mining, promising job creation and economic growth

Zimbabwe is making big strides towards its ambitious Vision 2030 goals by expanding its mining sector. This initiative aims to transform the nation’s economic landscape and create substantial employment opportunities. As reported by Herald Online, the project has the potential to generate an impressive 100,000 jobs over the next five years, with nearly half of these positions designated for engineers and other essential technical professionals.

The expansion of Zimbabwe’s mining industry is a direct response to the growing global demand for essential minerals like gold, lithium, platinum, and chrome. By increasing operational scales and enhancing the technical complexities of mining practices, Zimbabwe intends to meet this demand while also advancing its economy.

Central to this transformation is the Zimbabwean government’s Vision 2030, which envisions the nation evolving into an upper middle-income economy, with mining serving as a key pillar. By focusing on beneficiation and local value addition, Zimbabwe aims to not only boost employment but also enhance its export earnings. Currently, the formal mining sector employs about 60,000 individuals, and with increased investment in training for Zimbabwean youth, this number could see significant growth.

The need for skills development is urgent, particularly as the nation seeks to unlock the potential of its vast mineral resources. By encouraging youth to pursue careers in mining, Zimbabwe aims to cultivate a workforce that is both employable and pivotal in driving the nation’s developmental goals.

According to the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe (CoMZ), the mining sector currently contributes approximately 14.5% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It generates an estimated US$7.7 billion in output, accounts for about 20% (US$1.7 billion) of fiscal revenues, and provides over 45% (US$8 billion) of Zimbabwe’s foreign currency inflows. These figures highlight the critical role that mining plays within Zimbabwe’s economic framework.

As the nation embarks on this significant expansion of its mining sector, there are high hopes that the initiative will not only create new job opportunities but also foster a vibrant environment for local investment and skill development.
