Walkabout kicks off commissioning process at Lindi Jumbo graphite mine

Walkabout Resources has commenced the wet commissioning process at the Lindi Jumbo graphite mine in Tanzania. This marks the first time that graphite ore is being processed through the entire crushing circuit.
The Lindi Jumbo graphite mine is situated in the highly prospective Mozambique belt, known for its coarse flake graphite deposits. The mine is expected to have a lifespan of 24 years, generating an estimated A$1.4 billion in revenue. The pre-tax net present value is A$335 million, with a post-tax internal rate of return of 142%. The annual average earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization are projected to be A$44.1 million.
Wet commissioning
The wet commissioning process aims to mitigate risks associated with the mine’s start-up by creating a stockpile of high-grade graphite ore. The use of 19,000 tons from the existing ore stockpile will support a full month’s production at the projected capacity of the mine.
The Australian firm plans to build up high-grade and medium-grade stockpiles on the run-of-mine pad once operational mining begins. These stockpiles will contain over 20% and 10% total graphitic carbon (TGC), respectively, ensuring optimal grade feed to the plant and a smooth transition to expected ore throughput and recovery rates.
Dry commissioning activities are ongoing in the grinding and flotation circuit. The commissioning works are expected to continue in preparation for feeding the entire processing circuit. Andrew Cunningham, the Managing Director and CEO of Walkabout Resources, expressed satisfaction with the progress, emphasizing the de-risking effect of the fine ore stockpile on the concentrator’s ore source in the coming months.
