Upward Spiral 1471 leads sustainable mining and historic mine rehabilitation in South Africa

Mining, water treatment, and logistics solutions position the company at the forefront of responsible resource recovery

Upward Spiral 1471 is emerging as a key player in the rehabilitation of historic mine sites, combining tailings processing, water treatment, and logistics support to transform environmental liabilities into productive assets.

During a media engagement at its East Rand facility in Gauteng on March 12, the company outlined its integrated approach across three divisions: mining, water treatment, and logistics. CEO Dumisane Mazibuko described the initiative as a strategic response to South Africa’s growing emphasis on sustainability in the mining sector.

“As South Africa’s mining industry increasingly focuses on sustainability, rehabilitation, and the reprocessing of historic mine dumps, Upward Spiral 1471 identified an opportunity to apply its engineering capability to responsible resource recovery,” Mazibuko said.

He emphasised that the company’s growth is driven by reinvestment and technical expertise rather than institutional or public funding.

“We have managed to achieve this without institutional backing, without multinational ownership, and without the safety net of public funding,” he said, noting that expansion relies on reinvestment, technical skill, and seizing opportunities in a challenging environment.

Mining Division and Historic Mine Rehabilitation

The company’s mining division focuses on reprocessing historic mine dumps and tailings to recover residual minerals while addressing environmental liabilities.

Jackie Pahad, Managing Director, said: “The business operates under the required regulatory framework and holds all necessary mining and processing approvals to conduct compliant recovery operations. Our approach prioritises safety, environmental stewardship, and operational efficiency, ensuring historic mining liabilities are transformed into productive assets.”

Environmental management is central to the company’s operations. Pahad added: “Environmental responsibility forms a cornerstone of our operating philosophy. This commitment is fulfilled by delivering services that include waste management and water treatment solutions through our state-of-the-art waste management plant, rehabilitation, and site remediation.”

Upward Spiral has been rehabilitating a gold mine inactive since 2011. Activities include demolishing old infrastructure, screening tailings, blending materials for potential recovery, selective separation, and revegetation. Rehabilitation is currently paused due to pending water-use authorisation, required because of nearby wetlands.

Water Treatment and Hazardous Waste Management

Upward Spiral also operates a water treatment division, recovering and treating industrial effluent under a zero liquid discharge approach.

Engineer Hlayisani highlighted the dangers of untreated industrial effluent: “You get a lot of people, kids in the community… some deformations are caused by waste. This is hazardous waste. One drop in water, you drink it, and you can literally die immediately.”

The facility treats effluent in compliance with government regulations, recycling water back to local municipalities. Hlayisani explained: “If a truck comes, it’s coming to dispose; we do not send any truck back. Before discharge, we test in-house, do all checks and analyses to ensure what you’re sending is what we receive and within our treatment specifications.”

The company categorizes waste before treatment and only accepts liquid effluent, not tailings from active mines: “We divide and categorize the waste… Before we even enrol you, we run tests. We are proactive; everything is verified prior to treatment.”

Logistics Division and Operational Support

Upward Spiral’s logistics division supports mining operations with tipper trucks and specialized vehicles to transport materials across industrial sites.

Hlayisani noted the company’s unique presence in a highly monopolized sector: “We could be one of the one percent or less than one percent of black-owned businesses operating in this space.”

Despite regulatory hurdles, including halting certain rehabilitation projects until water-use authorisation is obtained, Upward Spiral continues to advance sustainable mining and responsible resource recovery across South Africa.
