Steenkampskraal appoints mining veteran Sechaba Letaba to lead next growth phase

Letaba leader brings nearly four decades of mining experience as rare earth miner accelerates expansion and processing capabilities

Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine (SMM) has appointed seasoned mining executive Sechaba Letaba as General Manager: Mining, as the company advances into the next phase of its development and expands its production capacity.

With nearly four decades of experience in South Africa’s mining sector, Letaba brings extensive operational and leadership expertise to the role. His mining career began in 1988 as a learner official in the underground operations of Kimberley shortly after completing matric.

Over the years, he has held a range of positions across the mining value chain, including Production Miner, Development Miner, Shift Boss, Mine Overseer, Mining Engineer, Superintendent, Operations Manager, Senior General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of Kudumane Manganese.

According to SMM, Letaba’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the company as it continues to strengthen its rare earth mining and processing capabilities.

“As SMM continues to develop its rare earth mining and processing capabilities, Letaba’s wealth of experience will be invaluable in guiding the operation through its growth journey while maintaining the highest standards of safety, efficiency, environmental stewardship and stakeholder engagement,” the company said.

Letaba holds a BTech Degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Johannesburg and is eager to apply his extensive experience to support the mine’s growth ambitions.

Drawing inspiration from Newton’s First Law of Motion, Letaba said his leadership philosophy is centred on continuous progress and adaptability.

“An object in motion continues at the same speed unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced force. For me, this serves as a reminder that progress is achieved through continuous movement, adaptability and the courage to embrace new opportunities and challenges,” he said.

Executive Chairman Dr Enock Mathebula said the appointment follows a series of important milestones achieved by the company. These include the successful commissioning of its on-site laboratory, the production of monazite concentrate for the first time in more than 60 years, and the commencement of construction on the mine’s new monazite processing plant.

The appointment positions SMM to build on this momentum as it advances its strategy of becoming a leading producer in the rare earth minerals sector.
