Simba Cement factory in Kenya to be closed

The Simba Cement factory in Kenya is set to be closed. Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho made the order of closure citing pollution complains.

Residents of Kilifi County had raised concerns about environmental and health risks related to industrial activities, notably from Simba Cement Factory and a proposed nuclear power plant. The situation drew the attention of CS Hassan Joho, who, alongside members of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Environment, Forest, and Mining, conducted a fact-finding mission to address the grievances.

Raised Concerns

In Rabai sub-county, residents have long complained about dust pollution, stone blasting, and forced displacement caused by Simba Cement. The company’s mining activities have allegedly damaged homes, caused respiratory health problems, and resulted in the loss of livestock. In response, Joho ordered the closure of the factory until it complies with mining regulations. Local leaders, including Kilifi Women Representative Gertrude Mbeyu, voiced additional concerns about other polluting factories in the region, such as Jumbo Steel Mills.

Meanwhile, in Kilifi North sub-county, the proposed construction of a Sh500 billion nuclear plant by the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) has sparked fears among residents. They worry about potential environmental and health impacts, citing examples of nuclear disasters worldwide. Kilifi North MP Owen Baya, initially a supporter, has withdrawn his backing in response to community opposition, while environmental groups from Kenya and abroad have also opposed the project, emphasizing its long-term risks.

The government’s rationale for the nuclear plant, set to produce 1,000 megawatts by 2034, is to meet the country’s growing energy demands and foster industrial growth. However, local leaders and environmentalists are calling for alternative solutions that safeguard the environment and the livelihoods of residents.
