Sandvik Rock Processing strengthens technical support across West Africa
From on-site engineering to parts management and training, Sandvik ensures mining operations stay efficient and reliable
West Africa continues to be one of the continent’s most dynamic regions for exploration and mining, and Sandvik Rock Processing is deepening its commitment to support operators with comprehensive technical services.
The company’s product range includes stationary crushers, screens and feeders, mobile crushers, and screens, and rock breakers, all backed by a multi-tiered support system designed to keep plants running efficiently.
“We understand the pressure in the mining sector for increased operational uptime, safety and productivity,” says Michael Okunola, Service Manager for Sandvik Rock Processing West Africa. “As supply partners to the industry, this can only be achieved through our continued investment in human and material resources on the ground, close to customers for rapid response.”
On-site engineering support tailored to customer needs
Sandvik’s on-site engineering services offer flexible options to suit any operation. Mines can have engineers present year-round, or schedule visits monthly, quarterly, or annually depending on the site’s remoteness and operational requirements.
“Our services are completely tailored to customers’ needs,” Okunola explains, “but the primary focus is generally the same: to closely monitor the condition and operation of equipment on site and to ensure proactive maintenance and to optimise its performance.”
Local service technicians are often the first responders, providing on-site diagnostics, troubleshooting, emergency work, and routine maintenance. After-market engineers also handle equipment commissioning and scheduled visits according to customer preferences.
Parts availability and proactive inventory management
Effective maintenance depends on having critical parts when needed. Sandvik Rock Processing supports mines through customised inventory management, including vendor-managed inventory (VMI) systems.
“Under our VMI system, we monitor stock levels on behalf of the customer and ensure timely replenishment,” Okunola explains. “We try as far as possible to help the customer avoid running out of parts, which can lead to delays and downtime.”
This may include placing critical spares on-site as consignment stock for immediate access. Sandvik’s SAM digital service further enhances operational efficiency by allowing both technical personnel and customers to monitor part usage, track equipment performance, and identify issues before they become critical.
Expanding regional presence
Sandvik Rock Processing maintains strategically located facilities across West Africa, including a hub in Kumasi, Ghana, with warehouse and workshop capabilities. Additional warehouses in Bamako (Mali), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), and Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) support rapid technical assistance and logistical coordination throughout the region.
“Our workshop facilities provide refurbishment services for key equipment, component rebuilds, and routine preventative maintenance,” Okunola says. “Having these facilities nearby reduces lead times, improves response rates, and enhances customer uptime.”
Investing in local skills and capacity
Recognising the importance of skilled operators and technicians, Sandvik invests in comprehensive training initiatives, both on-site and remotely. Programs include operator maintenance training, technical refreshers, and customised modules for specific equipment.
“We also run ‘train-the-trainer’ programs, empowering supervisors to share knowledge internally,” Okunola says. “Trainees receive certificates of competence, strengthening careers and boosting local skills.”
Sandvik further supports apprenticeships and partnerships with technical schools, while its e-learning platform allows customers to access training in equipment operation, preventative maintenance, and safety procedures.
“Our local technicians are well-trained and benefit from continuous upskilling through regular visits to the company’s facilities,” Okunola adds.
Commitment to West Africa
Sandvik Rock Processing’s growing footprint in West Africa signals a long-term commitment to the region. By combining technical expertise, parts availability, digital tools, and training, the company ensures that mining operations remain productive, safe, and sustainable.
