Rwanda embarks on crack down of illegal mines

Local government leaders of Rwanda have embarked on a crackdown of illegal mines. This follows a directive from the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB).
The current target is to clamp down on approximately 100 illegal mines already identified spread across various regions of Rwanda, with varying numbers identified in each province and the City of Kigali. These activities have led to accidents causing fatalities and injuries over the past five years.
Measures taken
Governor Alice Kayitesi highlighted challenges posed by illegal mining, especially in Kamonyi and Muhanga districts. District task forces responsible for mining and quarries have been fully activated to conduct inspections, provide recommendations for improvement, and take measures against the illegal activities.
She emphasized that several measures have been put in place to tackle this issue, including the full activation of district task forces responsible for mining and quarries. These task forces will conduct regular inspections to assess the activities at these mining sites.
In addition to inspections, the government is actively engaged in public awareness campaigns to dissuade citizens from participating in illegal mining activities. They are educating the population about the consequences of illegal mining and encouraging them to report any suspected illegal mining activities promptly.
