Rand Refinery partners with Gold Coast Refinery to strengthen responsible gold refining in Ghana

Strategic collaboration to enable local ASM gold refining and international compliance

Rand Refinery, Africa’s leading London Bullion Market Association LBMA Good Delivery accredited refiner, has entered a strategic partnership with Ghana based Gold Coast Refinery GCR, marking a significant milestone for the continent’s artisanal and small-scale mining ASM gold sector.

Under the agreement, Rand Refinery will provide technical, operational, and commercial supervision to GCR, supporting the local refining of ASM material while ensuring that internationally recognised assaying and refining standards are achieved.

The partnership is expected to enhance transparency, improve value retention within Ghana and strengthen responsible sourcing practices across the gold supply chain.

Established in 2016, Gold Coast Refinery is located in Accra, Ghana, and has a refining capacity of more than 80 tonnes per annum, with the potential for further expansion. As part of the initiative, GCR has signed an agreement with the Ghana Gold Board GoldBod to refine up to 1 000 kilogrammes of ASM gold ore per week, in line with responsible mining and sourcing standards.

GoldBod, a government owned entity, is the sole authorised body responsible for buying, selling, and exporting gold produced by small scale miners in Ghana.

“The signing of the agreement is a momentous occasion, and Rand Refinery being the leading LBMA Good Delivery accredited refiner on the continent stands ready to support the aspirations of the Ghana government for local refining, through our partnership with Gold Coast Refinery,” says Rand Refinery CEO, Dean Subramanian.

“We are committed to work with GCR and GoldBod to implement the necessary framework to ensure the material sourced meets international responsible sourcing requirements.”

As a recognised LBMA accredited refinery, Rand Refinery enforces strict, independently audited compliance systems to eliminate conflict gold, combat money laundering and uphold environmental, social and governance ESG responsibility throughout its supply chain.

Central to its sustainability approach is the People, Planet, Product and Provenance framework, which aims to ensure Africa’s gold resources benefit local communities while minimising environmental impact.

Through this partnership with GCR and collaboration with GoldBod, Rand Refinery is further strengthening its footprint across the African continent as a preferred refining partner. The initiative supports the development of local ASM refining capacity while reinforcing ethical sourcing, traceability, and transparency.

Rand Refinery remains committed to advancing Africa’s ASM sector as a critical driver of inclusive economic growth.
