Operations commences at Roan Upgrade project in Zambia

Operations works have commenced at the Roan Upgrade project in Zambia. Jubilee Metals Group CEO Leon Coetzer made the announcement and said the move is a strategy to boost copper processing capacity.

Scope of activities

The Roan Upgrade, featuring a newly constructed front-end section, is designed to enhance the site’s processing capabilities. This addition complements the existing milling and flotation sections, bringing Roan’s total capacity to 13,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of copper.

This new capacity is part of Jubilee’s broader strategy to expand its operational capabilities, which also includes the ongoing Sable refinery upgrade. The goal is to achieve a combined processing capacity of 25,000 tpa of copper within the next year.

As of 24 June 2024, Jubilee announced the civil and mechanical completion of the Roan Upgrade, and the project has now achieved another milestone with the installation and commissioning of the electrical control system (ECS), setting the stage for a production ramp-up.

Jubilee has begun processing previously mined material at Roan, which undergoes upgrading at the source before being converted into a saleable copper concentrate at Roan. Initially, this copper concentrate will be refined into copper cathode at the Sable facility until Sable’s capacity is fully allocated to processing material from the Munkoyo and Project G open-pit mines. Afterward, Roan’s copper concentrate will be sold on the open market.

The operations together with Sable refinery according to CEO Leon, will offer Jubilee tremendous processing flexibility and affords unique opportunity to aggressively pursue copper resources that are unlocked by this capability.
