Operation at Kombat mine in Namibia halted

Trigon Metals has announced a temporary suspension of operations at its Kombat Mine in Namibia to address unexpected maintenance needs for its dewatering systems.

The company reported that both main submersible dewatering pumps, essential for mine operations, had failed. The suspension is anticipated to last six to nine months. Trigon has initiated a phased recovery strategy focusing on repairing and upgrading key equipment to ensure long-term efficiency and reliability. The faulty pumps have been safely recovered and are currently under examination by a third-party engineering firm to enhance their performance and durability.

Mining activities are expected to resume in the third quarter of 2025, coinciding with the recommencement of dewatering operations once the pumps are repaired and preventive measures are in place. Currently, water levels have stabilized at 60 meters below service in Shaft 1 and 120 meters in Shaft 3.

Trigon Metals’ CEO and Executive Chairman, Jed Richardson, emphasized that while the temporary halt was unforeseen, it is a necessary step to strengthen the mine’s infrastructure for sustained success. He expressed gratitude to employees, contractors, and stakeholders for their dedication and trust, reaffirming the company’s commitment to emerging more resilient and poised to deliver long-term value.

The Kombat Mine, located at the southern margin of the Otavi Mountain Range in northern Namibia, has a history of copper production dating back to around 1900. After periods of dormancy, mining operations had resumed in recent years under Trigon Metals’ management.
