Nigeria shuts down Ruitai Mining Company

The government of Nigeria has announced the shut of Ruitai Mining Company, a Chinese firm that conducted titanium ore mining in the Ibeno area of Akwa Ibom state in Nigeria.

The firm has been accused of engaging in unauthorized titanium ore mining in the Akwa Ibom state. Uno Etim Eno, the local commissioner for environment and mineral resources, stated that the Chinese firm failed to provide the required authorization documents for mining titanium ore in the region.

Inspection

A joint ministerial inspection team visited the mining site and discovered what was described as “material that resembled black mud,” which was later identified as titanium ore. This discovery likely served as evidence of the company’s unauthorized activities.

“The Managing Director of the company, Zeng Zhonghuan and a director, Huang Ying, were not available at the site. The available staff members could not provide any information or documents. Ruitai Mining Company should terminate its mining operations forthwith, until due clearance legitimising its operation is completed with the state government,” said Uno.

In response to the discoveries, the government deployed police and military personnel to guard the mining location. This action aimed to ensure that the company could not continue its operations until it could provide the necessary documentation and obtain clearance from the state government. The shutdown of operation is until necessary clearance process and obtains authorization from the state government.
