Nigeria shut down illegal tin site in Kaduna State

Nigeria has shut down an unlawful operation in Damau, located in the Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Unlike previous confrontational enforcement efforts, this operation stood out for its peaceful resolution, achieved through extensive dialogue and collaboration with the local community.

The site, which is rich in tin and legally owned by Trobell Minerals Limited, had been taken over by illegal miners for several months. Local residents raised concerns over the negative consequences of the illicit activities, which included economic disruptions, environmental damage, and rising insecurity.

Consultative approach strategy

The Mining Marshals successfully used a consultative approach which involved engaging traditional rulers, held discussions with key community stakeholders, and built grassroots support. This strategy led to a calm and orderly withdrawal of the illegal miners under official oversight, without any conflict or violence.

Marking the first anniversary of the Mining Marshals, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the team. He promised increased resources and support to improve their reach and impact. “Hard work earns more work,” he said, encouraging the operatives to keep up their efforts.

This peaceful outcome in Damau presents a contrast to other regions where similar interventions have led to clashes. Dr. Alake urged communities nationwide to collaborate with authorities in identifying illegal operations, stressing that collective efforts are key to reforming the mining sector.

“The success in Damau illustrates that with the right mix of engagement and enforcement, we can curb illegal mining. Community cooperation is essential for building a safer, more attractive mining environment,” the Minister concluded.
