Nigeria, Australia collaborate technical training initiative for mining

The Federal Government of Nigeria has partnered with the Australian Government to roll out an intensive technical training initiative for mining professionals. The programme represents a significant milestone in the growing partnership between both countries, with strong support from the Commonwealth Government.
The capacity-building programme was formally launched by Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, at Murdoch University in Australia. The two-week training targets 11 Nigerian professionals and focuses on critical areas such as extractive metallurgy, geochemistry for sustainability, and advanced mineral research.
Boosting mining industry
Participants will benefit from both classroom instruction and hands-on experience, including site visits and engagements with global experts in mining operations, sustainability, and investment strategies. Dr. Alake highlighted that this initiative brings to life a vision formed during his participation in the 2023 Africa Down Under Conference held in Perth, where he signed a bilateral agreement with the Western Australian Government and Murdoch University. He expressed appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s continued support and acknowledged the crucial role played by the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, H.E. Leilani Bin-Juda, in facilitating the programme.
Dr. Alake aslo urged the Nigerian professionals to maximize the opportunity and return equipped to influence both policy and practice in the mining and minerals industry. Western Australia’s Minister for Mines and Petroleum, David Michael, welcomed the Nigerian delegation and pledged ongoing collaboration. He stated that the participants would be hosted by the Australian Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, which will expose them to international best practices in the field.
Murdoch University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Deeks, welcomed the initiative, noting that it aligns with the university’s mission to deliver inclusive, ethical, and impactful education on a global scale. This initiative marks a key step toward strengthening Nigeria’s mining sector through knowledge transfer, international cooperation, and the development of a skilled, future-ready workforce.
