Mozambique launches campaign to trace former mineworkers and dependents
Government urges former Southern African mineworkers and eligible dependants to come forward to confirm and regularise their MWPF claims
Mozambique’s Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Action has launched a campaign to locate former mineworkers and their dependants who may be beneficiaries of the Miners’ Provident Fund (MWPF).
The campaign runs from July 27 to August 14, 2026, and is aimed at people who previously worked as mineworkers in South Africa, as well as widows, children and other dependents of mineworkers who may be entitled to benefits from the fund.
The initiative is intended to ensure that beneficiaries can be located, confirm their details and regularise their claims.
The Mozambican government is calling on former mineworkers and eligible dependants to check the relevant lists and determine whether their names appear.
It is reported that the lists can be consultated at Provincial Justice and Labour Services and the Department of Labour and Social Security offices in Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane, as well as at district government offices.
Information is also available through the National Directorate of Migrant Labour, located at Avenida 24 de Julho No. 2298, 2nd floor.
Documents required
Former mineworkers whose names appear on the lists are required to provide several documents, including a national identity card or passport, bank account details, a mineworker identification card (Makhulu scope) and proof of payment or a TEBA contract.
Dependants face additional documentation requirements. These include the death certificate of the former mineworker, the deceased worker’s identity document or passport, the widow’s and dependants’ identity documents, the mineworker identification card and bank account details.
For minor children, birth certificates are also required, along with an authenticated declaration of residence.
The ministry says anyone whose name appears on the lists must report to the designated locations to confirm and regularise their situation.
The campaign highlights the ongoing effort to ensure that former mineworkers and their families who may have outstanding benefits from their years of employment in the Southern African mining industry are identified and given an opportunity to claim what they are entitled to.
