Morocco, Turkey ink strategic energy, mining deal

The governments of Morocco and Turkey have sealed two pivotal agreements focusing on energy, earth sciences, and mining.

These agreements formalized in Rabat by Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, are designed to enhance public-private partnerships, research and development, technical assistance, capacity building, and the exchange of expertise and technologies. They also include provisions for joint project development, cooperation between innovation agencies and research organizations, and technical visits, workshops, and seminars.

Scope of the agreement

Under the energy sector, the deals will focus on collaboration on developing and expanding renewable energy sources, joint initiatives to explore and develop green hydrogen technologies, projects to improve energy efficiency in both countries, integration and improvement of electricity generation and distribution networks, adoption and development of clean energy technologies, joint efforts to reduce carbon emissions, and exploration of potential hydrocarbon resources.

The mining agreement will cover; enhanced geological mapping and research, use of remote sensing and GIS technologies for better mineral assessment, implementing artificial intelligence to assess mineral resources, joint research projects and strategies for managing post-mining activities, improved seismic monitoring techniques, and managing strategic and critical minerals collaboratively.

A working team has been established to develop concrete projects in the coming months, including energy investments and purchases to reduce energy bills for both nations. The ceremony was attended by the Turkish Ambassador to Morocco and senior officials from various Moroccan agencies, signaling the ongoing commitment to enhance bilateral relations and mutual investments. This cooperation is expected to harness collective strengths for sustainable growth and mutual prosperity.
