Mogalakwena mine achieves IRMA 50 rating
Anglo American Platinum’s Mogalakwena mine in South Africa has achieved an IRMA 50 rating after being assessed against the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance’s (IRMA) comprehensive mining standard.
This marks the successful completion of IRMA audits across all four of the company’s platinum group metals (PGMs) mines. Unki mine in Zimbabwe was the first in the world to commit to an independent IRMA audit, securing an IRMA 75 rating in 2021 and reaffirming this level in 2024. Mototolo mine achieved IRMA 75 in 2024, while Amandelbult mine secured an IRMA 50 rating the same year. With Mogalakwena’s certification, Anglo American Platinum has now met its goal of having all its mines independently assured by 2025.
IRMA standard
The IRMA standard is regarded as one of the most rigorous frameworks for assessing responsible mining practices, covering environmental, social, and governance issues. The certification process evaluates mines based on how well they meet critical requirements across four core principles of responsible mining. Mines can achieve IRMA Transparency or ratings of IRMA 50, 75, or 100 depending on their performance. Achieving an IRMA 50 rating reflects that Mogalakwena has met at least half of the defined requirements, ensuring greater accountability and sustainability in its operations.
Craig Miller, CEO of Anglo American Platinum, highlighted the significance of the milestone, stating that achieving IRMA certification across all their mines strengthens stakeholder trust and demonstrates the company’s commitment to ethical and responsible mining. He praised the efforts of the teams across the company’s operations for enabling Anglo American Platinum to lead the way in sustainable mining. Aimee Boulanger, Executive Director of IRMA, noted that the certification allows stakeholders, including customers and local communities, to access transparent evaluations of environmental and social performance at the company’s mining sites.
This achievement reinforces Anglo American Platinum’s leadership in responsible mining within the PGMs sector. By securing IRMA certification across all its mines, the company has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable practices and ethical sourcing. This not only strengthens its market position but also enhances credibility with shareholders, customers, and communities relying on responsibly mined metals.
