Mali to partially lift mining permit suspension

Mali is set to partially lift its suspension on mining permits following improvements made to its mining register and governance procedures.

The suspension was initially introduced in November 2022 to streamline the country’s mining processes and strengthen oversight. In 2023, Mali implemented a new mining code designed to increase state ownership in mining assets and adjust tax structures to boost government revenue.

Renewal of exploration and exploitation permits,

The partial lift which is set to begin from 15 March 2025, will see  Mali’s mining administration resume processing applications for the renewal of exploration and exploitation permits, as well as transitions from exploration to exploitation and transfers of exploitation permits. However, the issuance of new mining permits and the transfer of search permits will remain on hold. This decision is expected to provide greater stability and transparency in the mining sector.

Mining companies operating in Mali have welcomed the announcement, viewing it as a positive step toward improving the business environment. Roscan Gold’s CEO, Nana Sangmuah, expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to strengthening the sector. He highlighted that this move reduces uncertainty around Roscan’s Kandiole Project and reinforces the potential for growth in Mali’s mining industry.

In response to recent safety concerns, the Malian government has also suspended new artisanal mining permits for foreign nationals. This follows two major mining accidents—a mine collapse in February that resulted in 43 fatalities and a flooded tunnel in January that claimed 13 lives. The government has since dismissed several administrative and security officials linked to these incidents as part of efforts to improve safety and accountability in the sector.
