Lifezone granted licence for Kabanga nickel project in Tanzania

Lifezone Metals has secured a licence that gives them the greenlight to operate at the Kabanga Nickel Project in Tanzania. The firm which was granted the licence by the country’s government, will be using a multi-metal processing facility for nickel, copper, and cobalt at the project.

The Kabanga Refinery will utilize Lifezone’s proprietary Hydromet Technology. This technology aims to facilitate the production of finished metals within Tanzania, potentially reducing capital and operating expenses, as well as transportation costs for concentrates and intermediate products.

Direct-to-metal solution

Lifezone’s subsidiary, Tembo Nickel, has been tasked to operate both the Kabanga and Kahama facilities. A definitive feasibility study for the Kabanga Nickel Project is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2024. This study will likely provide crucial insights into the economic viability and technical feasibility of the project.

The location of the refinery within the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), specifically recognized in the Buzwagi Mining Area in the Shinyanga region, offers various tax and economic incentives to the project. The project will benefit from existing infrastructure and workforce from the former Buzwagi Gold Mine, including camp and office facilities, regional power connections, an airstrip, and nearby road and railway links.

Chris Showalter, CEO of Lifezone Metals, expressed gratitude for the government’s support and commitment, highlighting the clear path to delivering a direct-to-metal solution and enabling the production of nickel, copper, and cobalt in Tanzania.
