Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant brings renewed hope for Hammanskraal residents
New 50ML/day facility will supply clean drinking water to more than 47,000 households, marking a major milestone in addressing the area's long-standing water crisis
Hammanskraal has long been one of Gauteng’s communities grappling with unreliable access to clean drinking water despite its proximity to South Africa’s economic hub.
As Mandela Month celebrations continue throughout July, Magalies Water, in collaboration with the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), has welcomed the official opening of the Klipdrift Package Water Treatment Plant in Hammanskraal.
Officially commissioned by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the launch forms part of the National Water Access Acceleration Programme. The 50-megalitre-per-day Klipdrift Package Water Treatment Plant is a major infrastructure project designed to provide additional potable water to more than 47,000 households while addressing the area’s long-standing water supply challenges.
The project was initiated following Hammanskraal’s devastating water quality crisis, which claimed approximately 30 lives. In response, Magalies Water and DWS implemented emergency interventions to restore access to clean and safe drinking water for affected communities.
“The commissioning of the Klipdrift Package Water Treatment Plant marks a major step forward in strengthening water infrastructure in the area. The facility will significantly increase water treatment capacity, improve the reliability of water supply, and help address the water shortages that have affected Hammanskraal in recent years,” said Magalies Water.
The utility added that the project represents a significant milestone in improving water security and ensuring residents have sustainable access to safe, reliable drinking water while supporting the government’s broader commitment to expanding essential services to communities across the country.
