Kenya, Mizztech Group ink MoU to revive fluorspar mining in Kerio Valley

Kenya has sealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chinese technology firm Mizztech Group to modernise its fluorspar processing plant in Kerio Valley. The agreement, signed at the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) headquarters in Nairobi, sets the stage for an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract expected to be concluded within six months.
The deal according to Sofax Fluorspar Kenya CEO John Masanda is a step toward reviving and expanding fluorspar mining and processing in the region. He noted that the move comes shortly after the company was awarded a 25-year mining licence (ML/2025/0216) by the State Department of Mining, valid until June 3, 2050. The licence grants rights to mine, process, and market Acidspar Grade Fluorspar (97% CaF₂), a high-value mineral in strong global demand.
Boost in economic growth
“This MoU with Mizztech Group is not just about refurbishing an old plant. It represents a broader vision to unlock the full economic potential of the Kerio Valley fluorspar belt, create sustainable employment, and establish Kenya as a credible player in the international fluorspar value chain,” he said.
On his part, Mizztech Group CEO Charles Cheng highlighted fluorspar’s critical role in industries such as steel, aluminium, glass, ceramics, and specialty chemicals.
“Our commitment is to deploy world-class expertise and innovative technologies that will align the plant with global processing and environmental standards,” Cheng stated.
Sofax Fluorspar affirmed that the refurbishment will significantly improve plant efficiency and product quality, ultimately boosting fluorspar exports and contributing to Kenya’s broader economic growth objectives.
