Ghana scoops back its position as Africa’s top gold producer

Ghana has regained its position as Africa’s top gold producer and the 10th biggest producer globally in 2022.  According to the Ghana Chamber of Mines, the country experienced a significant jump of 32% in gold production, reaching 3.7 million ounces.

The growth in gold production was seen in both the large-scale and small-scale sectors. In fact, the large-scale gold sub-sector achieved its highest output in the country’s history. This indicates positive development and potential for the mining industry in Ghana.

Formalizing small-scale mining

The government of Ghana is committed to protecting legitimate mining activities from criminal activities. Ben Aryee, the special advisor to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, mentioned that the government will also focus on formalizing small-scale mining and implementing alternative livelihood programs to address poverty and unemployment challenges in the country.

Apart from Ghana, there are other African countries with significant gold mining activities. South Africa, Tanzania, and Mali are also prominent gold producers on the continent. Additionally, Nigeria has deposits of gold in Zamfara and Iperindo in Osun state, making it another gold-producing country in Africa.
