Genmin granted green light for Gabon iron ore project

Genmin has announced it has received the final approval for the social and environmental impact assessment (SEIA) for Gabon iron ore project.

Gabon’s Ministry of Enviroment issued the SEIA together with an environmental conformance certificate, which is a critical milestone before receiving the mining permit for the project. The mining permit, which is issued by a decree of the President of Gabon, will grant Genmin the exclusive right to mine for iron ore in the area.

The company has applied for a large-scale mining permit that would allow them to conduct mining operations at the Baniaka project for an initial term of 20 years, aiming to produce at least five million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of iron ore.

Genmin’s managing director and CEO, Joe Ariti, expressed their delight in receiving the SEIA approval and the environmental conformance certificate. He mentioned that this is a crucial step towards their goal of commencing production at the Baniaka project in the second half of 2024. He also acknowledged the support and guidance provided by the Ministry of Environment in Gabon and the efforts of their partners, WSP-Golder, a global sustainability consultant, and local social and environmental consultant, TEREA, in navigating the SEIA process.

The Baniaka iron ore project is fully owned by Genmin and is situated in the south-east region of Gabon. It comprises two exploration licenses, Baniaka and Baniaka West, covering a total area of 881km². With the necessary approvals and clearances in place, Genmin is now closer to commencing development and operations at the project.
