Gabon to develop digital platform for mining
The government of Gabon is set develop a unified digital platform that will centralize and streamline mining operations management across the country.
The country’s Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of Digital Economy formed a partnership, aimed at enhancing efficiency and transparency, is part of Gabon’s broader digitalization strategy to modernize key economic sectors, making them more attractive to investors and enhancing governance.
Integrated solutions
The platform, once launched, will offer an integrated solution for the management of mining permits, covering applications, renewals, transfers, and electronic payments. It is designed to make information more accessible to stakeholders, reducing bureaucratic delays and cutting costs by leveraging local resources rather than outsourcing. Mines Minister Gilles Nembe emphasized that Gabon has the in-house expertise to develop this custom system, underscoring the government’s commitment to self-reliance in technological infrastructure.
“This agreement aims to develop local, customized solutions for managing mining permit allocation and utilization, avoiding the high costs of outsourcing. Gabon possesses the necessary skills, staff, and knowledge to undertake this task,” said Mines Minister Gilles Nembe.
With mining contributing approximately 5% of Gabon’s GDP, 7% of employment, and 9% of exports in 2022, the sector is crucial to the national economy. By digitizing mining administration, the government aims to attract private investment, enhance data management, and provide a transparent, secure business environment. This transformation aligns with the transitional government’s vision for diversifying Gabon’s economy and meeting the need for sustainable resource management.
