Epiroc has unveiled a new digital solutions for surface mining, marking an advancement in safety and efficiency for mining operations.

The introduction of Blast Support and the enhanced Situational Awareness feature demonstrates Epiroc’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art technologies for surface mining. The integration of technologies previously successful in underground mines into the surface mining market reflects Epiroc’s confidence in their capabilities and their desire to address the unique challenges faced in open-pit mining. By leveraging over a decade of experience and more than 40 installations worldwide, Epiroc aims to bring about a positive impact on safety and operational efficiency in surface mining.

Situational Awareness application

The Situational Awareness application, now adapted for surface mining, offers a comprehensive solution for planning, executing, and monitoring mining operations. The incorporation of 3D situational awareness, open-space positioning, and satellite imaging results in a detailed 3D map of the blast area, covering both surface blast zones and tunnels.

The introduction of Zone-based Messages within Situational Awareness enhances communication and safety protocols. This feature allows control room personnel to send targeted messages to individuals in specific areas of the mine. These messages can convey information, warnings, or alarms, and can be either persistent or instant, providing flexibility in communication. Automation through Event Automation scripts triggered by IoT sensors further streamlines the communication process, especially in response to factors like ground stability.

The Blast Support tool addresses a critical aspect of mining safety by ensuring that personnel are at a safe distance before initiating a blast. The real-time tracking of individuals through tags enables the control room to evacuate designated areas, ensuring that the blasting process is both safe and timely. This not only enhances personnel safety but also contributes to the overall efficiency of mining operations.
