Early-stage construction kicks off at Kangankunde project in Malawi

Lindian Resources, has begun early-stage construction activities at its Kangankunde rare earths project in Malawi, widely regarded as one of the most promising undeveloped rare earth deposits globally.
The Australian mining company will commence on key infrastructure, including civil works and site preparation, following the February 2025 launch of a 5-kilometre access road to the site. This infrastructure drive is part of Lindian’s broader plan to fast-track development and reduce early-stage project risks.

Significant headway has been made, with initial earthworks nearing completion. Key areas such as processing plant zones, equipment laydown pads, and management office setups are now established. Progress on the access road has exceeded expectations, putting it well ahead of schedule and on track for completion in the second quarter of 2025. The expedited pace has enabled the company to reassign machinery and skilled labour from roadwork to other aspects of the project—boosting both efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Lindian has placed a strong focus on local employment, with more than 70% of site jobs held by Malawian workers. In line with its commitment to sustainability, the company is also integrating environmental best practices and collaborating with local businesses to enhance economic opportunities in nearby communities.
Zac Komur, Chair of Project Delivery at Lindian, highlighted the significance of this progress, stating that the company’s approach anchored in strong partnerships, expert management, and efficient resource use demonstrates its determination to deliver lasting value while accelerating the project timeline.
To support the development, Lindian also secured a non-binding funding agreement with Gerald Group in December 2024 for a $50 million (A$79.88 million) investment package. This funding is expected to play a key role in pushing the project toward its next phase.
