Weir, a global leader in mining technology, was awarded an order to supply a crushing circuit for Brightstar Resources’ Laverton Processing Plant, part of the Goldfields gold project in Western Australia. The order was received in Q1 2026 and its value has not been disclosed. The order includes Weir’s recently upgraded ENDURON® ET series jaw crusher and ENDURON® EC series cone crusher. Weir will also supply WARMAN® pumps and CAVEX® hydrocyclones for the project.

Weir worked with GR Engineering Service Limited on the circuit design and will support the installation and commissioning of the 1.5 Mt/y gold processing facility. Brightstar is targeting first gold by mid-2027. Jyotirmoy Roy, Weir, General Manager APAC, Equipment Solutions said: ‘The release of the upgraded ENDURON jaw and cone crusher was the culmination of many years’ work. Weir is focused on bringing new technologies and solutions to market that help miners overcome their most pressing challenges.

‘Today, miners are taking a more holistic view of their operations; rather than looking at pieces of equipment in isolation. As they increasingly consider the impact of upstream operations on downstream activities, and vice versa, Weir has a portfolio of equipment spanning the mining value chain, which allows us to enable this approach. ‘Weir has a vast service network to ensure we are close to our customers and support them, from commissioning to ramp-up through to becoming fully operational.

Industry-specific focus and life cycle support are the standout features of SEW-EURODRIVE’s presence at Electra Mining Africa 2026, according to Jonathan McKey, National Sales & Marketing Manager at SEW-EURODRIVE.

“Our exhibition stands will reflect how we partner with customers across the full operational lifecycle – from new installations through to maintenance, upgrades, optimisation and long-term asset management,” McKey says. “The overarching message is about business integration and modernisation, to take customers further down their sustainability and productivity journey.”

He highlights that SEW-EURODRIVE has expanded its offerings not only through exciting innovations in equipment and solutions, but through services to assess customers’ existing infrastructure and enhance it for more efficient and productive operation. This philosophy shapes both of the company’s stands at the show.

“Visitors to our main stand in Hall 5 will appreciate the industry-focused layout facilitating conversations that are both relevant and technically focused,” he explains. “Instead of a generalised display, visitors will be able to engage directly with specialists aligned to specific sectors including mining, materials handling and logistics.”

To enhance the value of these vital face-to-face discussions, SEW-EURODRIVE will have management and technical experts on hand throughout the exhibition. Dedicated meeting areas will also allow for more private discussions around operational challenges, project requirements or longer-term strategic partnerships.

At the company’s second exhibition stand which is in Hall 4, SEW-EURODRIVE will focus on its electronics offerings while also showcasing its on-site energy surveys. The company’s experts will demonstrate how they use advanced tools to conduct these surveys and the important benefits they deliver.

“We will unveil selected newer technologies on our stands with the focus on showing how this innovation is driven by customer need,” McKey says. “We avoid promoting products for their own sake; rather, we use these forums to ask visitors about the technical challenges they face and then we design our solutions to address them.”

This extends beyond physical equipment to include digital tools, training, service agreements and maintenance programmes. SEW-EURODRIVE will also be showcasing its training, digital solutions, after-sales and maintenance service.

“Another theme at the exhibition will be the modernisation of existing plant infrastructure,” he says. “This is particularly relevant to mining operations where legacy equipment often remains in service for decades.”

Smarter technologies and modern engineering solutions are helping industries improve efficiency and competitiveness. Picture: Supplied.

While older systems may still be functional, their performance may be compromised and cost effectiveness may not be optimal. SEW-EURODRIVE increasingly works with customers to evaluate existing installations, comparing them against current technologies and identifying opportunities for improvement. This can include energy surveys, drivetrain assessments, maintenance reviews and broader operational optimisation studies.

“We can modernise those products, give better service life and make an impact across multiple facets of a customer’s business – including running costs,” he says. “We can enhance all of that by modernising the plant with technology.”

Importantly, the company aims to reduce the disruption often associated with upgrading legacy infrastructure with specialised solutions to streamline the transition while mitigating the associated risk. Another key talking point across the stands will be SEW-EURODRIVE’s growing service capability in South Africa including its expanded aftermarket support, reverse engineering and repair services. This capability extends beyond servicing its own products, to include other OEMs’ equipment.

“Our recently expanded facilities in Aeroton, Johannesburg, have further improved our service capabilities not just for our own product but also for non-SEW products,” he says. “With our depth of technical expertise and specialised workshop equipment, we can reverse engineer and repair obsolete products back to workable health.”

By visiting SEW-EURODRIVE, Electra Mining Africa visitors can begin a holistic discussion about their current operational demands and future plans at their specific mine or industrial plant. The experienced SEW-EURODRIVE people on hand at the exhibition will help plot the road the improved asset performance.

“Our presence further underscores that mining remains a major global growth sector for us, especially as mines look for ways of getting minerals out of the ground more efficiently,” McKey says. “This pressure is accelerating demand for modern drive technology, automation and broader operational optimisation which are the areas where we see growing opportunity.”

McKey also expects plenty of interest from Electra Mining Africa visitors in infrastructure development and asset improvement more broadly. He notes that SEW-EURODRIVE is increasingly becoming involved in projects that not only support industrial operations, but help modernise economies through better engineering, improved reliability and smarter technologies.

From the moment rough diamonds arrive from mine operations to the point they are presented for sale, De Beers Group’s Sky Park facility has become the central point where precision, security and consistency converge. Since opening in March 2023, the De Beers Sightholder Sales South Africa (DBSSSA) facility has strengthened the end-to-end flow of South Africa’s rough diamond production, efficiently guiding each stone through cleaning, sorting, valuation, traceability and final sale.

Strategically located near O. R. Tambo International Airport, east of Johannesburg, DBSSSA serves as the primary processing and sales hub for De Beers’ South African rough diamond production. The facility combines proprietary technology, specialist expertise and rigorous controls to move diamonds securely and efficiently from production through to market.

According to Blanche Louw, Senior Operations Manager at DBSSSA, the facility was purpose-designed around the logical progression of each diamond’s journey. “Our operation is meticulously sequenced – moving diamonds through the cleaning zones and immediately into technical sorting and valuation areas,” she says. “The layout of the building is specifically designed to bring optimal efficiencies into our processes.”

Diamonds arrive under tightly controlled custody and are first weighed and registered before entering the Central Cleaning Plant. Here, De Beers has introduced an innovative alternative to traditional hydrofluoric acid cleaning, significantly improving both safety and sustainability while still meeting stringent valuation and export standards.

An employee carefully sorts rough diamonds at the GSS facility in Gaborone, Botswana. Picture: Supplied.

This sustainability focus extends to the building itself which has earned a five-star Green Star rating. A 360 kW solar installation, comprising more than 1,200 panels and 575 kilowatt-hours of battery storage, further enhances the facility’s environmental performance while reducing energy costs.

Once cleaned, diamonds move into specialised valuation and sorting streams where carat weight, clarity, colour and cutting potential are assessed. Smaller high volume stones are processed through automated technical sorting systems, while larger higher value stones continue to rely on the expertise of highly skilled human sorters. Together, these processes enable diamonds to be classified into more than 10,000 categories, each linked to De Beers’ global pricing framework.

A defining strength of the operation is the consistency it delivers through De Beers’ Sightholder sales model. By aggregating like-for-like categories from multiple mines, the business creates consistent rough diamond “boxes” tailored to customers’ manufacturing requirements and downstream market demand. These are presented at ten Sight sales events each year, with South African customers viewing their allocations in dedicated rooms at Sky Park.

Traceability and provenance are also embedded at the core of the operation. All rough diamonds of one carat and above are digitally scanned on arrival to create a unique fingerprint record. At the point of sale, each diamond is rescanned and matched against the original intake data through Tracr, De Beers’ blockchain-backed traceability platform, which now holds records for more than five million rough diamonds.

According to Lindie Fourie, Operations Manager at the Bargaining Council for the Civil Engineering Industry (BCCEI), contractors must also maximise community benefit on their projects and often contend with volatile social dynamics and even criminal activity on site.

“In this context, the positive impact of labour stability and workforce morale should not be underestimated,” Fourie says. “When employees feel heard and valued, and are earning a fair wage, this lays the foundation for a committed workforce that can drive productivity.”

Construction remains a highly labour-intensive industry, with significant potential not only to create employment but to open pathways into the formal working environment. Particularly on public sector contracts, contractors frequently employ unskilled local labour and provide foundational training that enhances individual capability and improves overall workflow efficiency.

“Every member of the workforce must be focused on safe operations and the correct application of their skills and training,” she says. “Knowing they are being treated and paid fairly makes a tangible difference to the dedication and accountability with which they perform their duties.”

Lindie Fourie, Operations Manager at BCCEI. Picture: Supplied.

A key role of the BCCEI is to facilitate multi-year collective agreements between employers and employee representatives. These agreements, currently in place until August 2028, establish minimum wages and conditions across the sector, providing certainty and predictability for both contractors and workers. By creating a shared understanding of what applies on site, the agreements reduce the risk of disputes and disruptions that could compromise productivity.

“This certainty and fairness are critical in any workplace, but they take on added importance in construction where employees spend long hours outdoors, often exposed to demanding conditions,” Fourie notes.

Fair wages and consistent working conditions also strengthen the risk profile of civil engineering contracts. With competition intensifying and public sector budgets under pressure, even short delays or stoppages can severely erode already thin margins. Rework, disruptions and penalties for late delivery place further strain on contractors.

“When contractors understand the wage framework – not only for the current year but for the years ahead – they can price more accurately and plan more effectively,” she explains. “That certainty removes a significant source of risk during project execution.”

For collective agreements to deliver their intended stabilising effect, however, they must be observed by all participants on site, including smaller subcontractors. Fourie emphasises that membership of the BCCEI is not optional, regardless of company size.

“While large established contractors typically lead civil engineering projects, they rely on numerous smaller subcontractors to meet the local participation targets and to execute specialised tasks, spreading opportunity and value,” she says. “If any party underpays workers relative to agreed wage levels, it can quickly become a point of contention that disrupts progress.”

In a highly competitive market, labour certainty helps civil engineering contractors manage risk, protect margins and deliver projects more efficiently. Picture: Supplied.

A level playing field is therefore fundamental to the BCCEI’s mandate. By ensuring that labour costs are aligned across the value chain, contractors and subcontractors alike can tender realistically and competitively.

“Contractors strive to manage and mitigate every risk on a project,” Fourie concludes. “Ensuring that labour conditions are clear, fair and consistently applied removes a significant variable from the productivity equation.”

Ultimately, fair wages are not simply a compliance requirement. In a sector defined by risk, tight margins and demanding delivery schedules, they are central to stability, efficiency and sustained productivity.

Signalling Africa’s growing appetite for state-of-the-art mining technology, Sandvik Rock Processing is delivering the first Sandvik CH662 cone crushers to a platinum mining project in South Africa’s Limpopo province.

The CH662 represents the latest evolution of Sandvik’s long-established CH660 platform, introducing several mechanical and digital upgrades that improve throughput, reliability and maintenance efficiency. PC Kruger, Business Line Manager Crushing at Sandvik Rock Processing, says mining companies across the continent are increasingly embracing electrification, remote monitoring and automation technologies.

“This is creating an environment where advanced crushing systems such as the CH662 are becoming more attractive,” Kruger says. “This milestone order challenges longstanding perceptions that African mining operations are slow to adopt new technologies.”

These two Sandvik CH662 units will be deployed in a secondary crushing application as part of an underground mining expansion project. Factory acceptance testing was completed in Sweden during the second quarter of 2026 before the units were shipped to South Africa. The order for the two CH662 crushers was placed through a major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, with one crusher designated as the duty unit and the second as a standby machine – underscoring the critical role crushing equipment plays in modern mineral processing plants.

Yashik Anand, Capital Sales Engineer for Sandvik Rock Processing’s static crushing business, explains that the project demonstrates how customers are now prioritising operational efficiency, reliability and digital integration when selecting crushing equipment. Anand highlights that the redesigned top shell and main shaft contribute substantially to the crusher’s durability and operational stability.

“The upgraded top shell provides improved material distribution and greater structural strength, while the new main shaft enhances reliability under high-capacity conditions,” he says. “The spider bushing has also been re-engineered to improve wear resistance and extend service life.”

Another important design improvement is eliminating the backing compound, which saves time during liner changes. Traditional cone crusher linings often require extended curing periods before the machine can return to operation, but the CH662’s steel-to-steel design removes this delay.

The first Sandvik CH662 cone crushers in Africa are destined for a platinum mining project in Limpopo, showcasing the continent’s growing adoption of advanced crushing technology. Picture: Supplied.

“By removing the backing compound from the design, we can save customers up to 24 hours of waiting time during liner replacement procedures,” he says.

Automation and digital integration form another key advance in the Sandvik CH662 upgrade package. The crusher incorporates Sandvik’s new ACS-c 5 ASRi control system, which combines the functionality of previous crusher control platforms into a more advanced and user-friendly automation package. Users benefit from automated setting regulation, enhanced monitoring functionality and integration with digital services platforms for real-time performance analysis and remote diagnostics.

“Especially for mining operations that are located far from major service centres, these capabilities can deliver substantial operational advantages,” Anand says. “Proactive monitoring of the crusher allows operators to identify issues earlier and prevent unplanned stoppages.”

Kruger points out that remote monitoring capabilities also support the efficiency of Sandvik Rock Processing’s field service technicians, who often travel several hours to customers’ sites.

“We can remotely support the machine and start fault-finding immediately when there is an issue,” he explains. “By the time a technician reaches the site, we already have a good understanding of what needs to be repaired or replaced.”

This order also highlights the growing importance of technical collaboration between OEMs and EPC contractors during plant design and equipment selection, Anand says. Sandvik’s PlantDesigner simulation software allowed multiple process simulations and flowsheet iterations to optimise the crushing circuit for the customer’s metallurgical requirements.

Looking ahead, Kruger says the Sandvik CH662 is well-positioned for broader adoption across Africa’s mining and aggregates sectors, particularly within the continent’s mid-range processing operations.

“Mining operations in Africa generally do not require the ultra-large crushing systems that are more common in regions like South America,” he notes. “The CH662 fits well into the African market’s production range of 400 to 1000 t/h.”

Sandvik’s upgrade strategy includes retrofit, rebuild and fully integrated smart crusher options, all supported by its three-year standard warranty.

After a one-year hiatus, the 2024 winner of the South African Institute of Auctioneers (SAIA) SA National Auction Championship, Vincent Pike, has done it again, taking top honours at the industry’s premier event held at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg recently.

The competition is held every year and has supported and boosted the careers of many of the country’s top auctioneers in recent years. It sees top auctioneers from across the country vie for top honours by auctioning various lots for charity. Competitors are judged on a host of criteria that includes preparation, engagement with the audience, control of bidders and bids, as well as the effectiveness of their chant and overall success of their auction, among others.

This year, livestock auctioneer Pike faced the audience of peers and dignitaries as well as the expert judging panel and was able to shift gears from his highly technical and research-heavy animal sales to pull off a well-controlled and engaging auction of wine and a hunting trip that concluded with a tidy sum collected for charity at the fall of the hammer.

“This second win felt less nerve-wracking than the first one, but it is no less significant for me. To me, it is kind of confirmation that I am deserving of this massive honour among the highest level of competitors in the country. It really means a lot to me.”

He says that while observers may see auctions as a functional sales method, there is a lot that goes into the preparation that is designed to introduce goods for sale in a positive manner and to lead bidders to pay a fair price. For him, the real advantage this year was his control of the auction and engagement with the audience.

As with his day-to-day auctions at Vleissentraal Bethlehem, Pike’s strategy during the auction was centred on managing increments carefully based on demand from the bidders while maintaining the right speed and structure to keep bidders going. “As soon as I saw demand increasing, I adjusted increments and fetched a good price.

Vincent Pike is this year’s SAIA SA National Auctioneers Champion, with first runner-up Sinovuyo Gaika and second runner-up Mvuyisi Booi. Picture: Supplied.

“But for me, the auction started way earlier with preparation, knowing the lots in detail before stepping into the ring. That included pricing context and planning the sale around the kind of demand I thought I could expect. I also planned the auction and had built up a solid narrative for each lot before I stepped up onto the stage.

“Being prepared is everything in this game, and knowing the items and doing your homework is a key aspect of auctioneering. Then, when it’s your time to lead the auction, it becomes about pacing yourself, breathing, tempo and clarity, and this was tough for me to do transitioning from fast-moving livestock auctions into a formal competition setting,” he says.

Pike says that winning the competition in 2024 gave his career a significant boost, and thanks to his growing reputation within the livestock and auctioneering industry in general, his career is flourishing. His work as an auctioneer currently spans commercial livestock, stud animals, online dispersals and some property-related sales.

He described the livestock environment as one of the most technically demanding segments of auctioneering, as it requires constant calculation of slaughter values, market rates, feedlot pricing and animal condition in real time. This is something that is learned over many years and needs close attention to details, including in-depth animal knowledge and a keen understanding of the market. Perhaps the finest skill he has learned for the competition is the ability to make decisions instantly without slowing the sale, and this showed on the night. It also extends to sellers, where expectation management and transparency determine whether long-term relationships hold.

His victory adds to an expanding list of national achievements, including the Toyota SA National Young Livestock Championships title in 2023 and SAIA Auctioneer of the Year in 2024. He now turns his focus to the international stage, the National Auctioneers Association (NAA) competition in San Antonio, Texas, taking place from 14–17 July.

He previously qualified in 2024 but was unable to attend due to financial constraints. This year, he plans to represent The SA Institute of Auctioneers (SAIA) as the 2026 SA National Auctioneers Champion, internationally and engage with auctioneers from across the world.

The Bargaining Council for the Civil Engineering Industry (BCCEI) continues to play an important role in supporting stability, compliance and fair labour practices across South Africa’s civil engineering sector. One area where this role is increasingly valuable is in raising awareness and understanding of the industry’s collective agreements among contractors and subcontractors operating on construction projects.

The civil engineering sector relies heavily on collaboration between principal contractors and a wide network of subcontractors. These subcontractors often provide specialised skills and services that are critical to the successful delivery of infrastructure projects. However, many smaller or emerging subcontractors may not always be fully familiar with the requirements and obligations contained in the industry’s collective agreements.

According to Lindie Fourie, Operations Manager at the BCCEI, improving awareness of these agreements benefits the entire sector. “When all parties understand the applicable wage determinations, employment conditions and compliance requirements, projects can operate more smoothly and avoid unnecessary disputes or misunderstandings,” she explains.

Importantly, this responsibility does not rest solely with principal contractors. While main contractors typically engage subcontractors as part of project delivery, the BCCEI itself provides a range of resources and support mechanisms to help industry participants understand the collective agreements that govern the sector.

Raising awareness of collective agreements among contractors and subcontractors remains a key priority in strengthening compliance across infrastructure projects. Picture: Supplied.

Through its established structures, the BCCEI offers guidance, information sessions and engagement opportunities aimed at ensuring that both established and emerging contractors have access to accurate and practical information. These initiatives are designed to strengthen compliance while also supporting a more inclusive and transparent operating environment within the industry.

One practical step that can further strengthen this awareness is for main contractors to consider inviting the BCCEI to participate in briefing sessions or induction programmes for prospective subcontractors.

“These engagements create an opportunity for the BCCEI to explain the collective agreements directly, answer questions and clarify expectations before work begins on site,” Fourie notes.

Such sessions are particularly valuable for subcontractors who may be entering the civil engineering environment for the first time or who operate across multiple sectors where labour frameworks differ. Direct engagement with the BCCEI helps ensure that contractors and subcontractors receive consistent, authoritative information from the body responsible for administering the agreements.

This collaborative approach benefits all stakeholders. Subcontractors gain clarity on their obligations and rights, main contractors reduce the risk of compliance challenges on their projects, and the industry as a whole strengthens its commitment to fair and lawful employment practices.

“The BCCEI’s role is not only regulatory but also supportive,” Fourie adds. “By working alongside contractors and providing accessible information, the BCCEI aims to build a culture of understanding and cooperation within the sector.”

As South Africa continues to prioritise infrastructure development, ensuring that all participants in the civil engineering value chain understand the framework that governs labour relations will remain essential. Through continued engagement and partnership with industry stakeholders, the BCCEI is well-positioned to assist contractors and subcontractors alike in navigating the collective agreements that underpin the sector’s stability and growth.
