Bannerman Energy receives approval for Etango uranium project

Bannerman Energy has received the go ahead for Etango uranium project in Namibia. The mining license comes at a time when uranium prices have rallied to almost 16-year highs.

The Etango uranium project is located in the Erongo region of Namibia, situated 30 km southeast of Swakopmund. Bannerman Energy stated that receiving the mining license allowed the company to immediately award two key early works contracts with a combined value of $2 million. These contracts are related to building a temporary construction water supply and setting a site access road.

Uranium demand

With the mining license in place, Bannerman Energy stated that the Etango project is now fully permitted. This enables the company to progress key project workstreams toward a final investment decision. Currently, only two of Namibia’s three mines produce uranium — Rossing uranium mine and Husab uranium, both controlled by Chinese investors. Australia’s Paladin Energy (ASX: PDN) plans to resume commercial production at its Langer Heinrich mine in early 2024.

Uranium is in demand as the world shifts away from fossil fuels. Morgan Stanley analysts expressed bullish sentiment on uranium prices, expecting them to reach $95 per pound by the second quarter of 2024. Analysts believe that the current supply of uranium cannot keep up with the growing demand, contributing to the positive outlook for uranium prices.
