Aterian issues update on Rwanda lithium JV with Rio Tinto

Aterian Plc, has released update that reflects the collaborative efforts between Aterian and Rio Tinto in advancing lithium exploration activities in Rwanda.

Aterian Plc, a critical metal-focused exploration and development company, had entered into a lithium-focused Earn-In Investment and Joint Venture Agreement with Rio Tinto Mining and Exploration Ltd in the Republic of Rwanda.

Positive results

The announcement includes positive results and a focus on contributing to the energy transition. Sandy Walker, the Programme Manager for Rwanda at Rio Tinto, expressed pleasure at the progress and safety of the exploration activities. They are exploring for lithium, and the exploration activities are now underway, with results expected from the data being collected.

Aterian’s local subsidiary, Kinunga Mining Limited, is actively supporting Rio Tinto in staging the necessary equipment for the establishment of a maiden drill program over the license area in 2024. Simon Rollason, CEO of Aterian, acknowledged and expressed gratitude for the support received from the Government of Rwanda, the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board, as well as regional and local governments. This support has been crucial for completing the joint venture and initiating exploration efforts.
