Alphamin confirms fatal incident at Mpama South Mine in the DRC
An investigation is underway after an unexpected detonation during routine blasting preparations at the Mpama South underground operation
Alphamin Resources Corp has confirmed a fatal workplace incident involving an employee at its Mpama South underground mine, operated by subsidiary Alphamin Bisie Mining S.A., in east central Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The incident occurred on 24 December at approximately 18:00 local time during routine preparations for a planned night shift blast. According to the company, underground areas had been evacuated as scheduled when an unexpected detonation occurred while blasting wires were being connected. The employee involved sustained fatal injuries.
Alphamin said the safety and wellbeing of its workforce remain its highest priority and described the loss as deeply tragic. The company extended its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues affected, acknowledging the profound impact of the incident on the broader mining team.
Relevant authorities were immediately notified, and a full investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the incident. Mining operations at Mpama South were temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure and have since resumed following an inspection and site visit by the appropriate local authority.
The Mpama South mine forms part of Alphamin’s Bisie tin operations, which are regarded as strategically important to global tin supply. The company reiterated its commitment to maintaining high safety standards and to implementing any corrective measures identified through the investigation process.
