Algeria, Japan hold talks on energy, mining sector
The government of Algeria represented by Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Arkab, held discussions with Japanese Ambassador to Algeria, Suzuki Kotaro, to explore avenues for enhanced collaboration in the energy, mining, and renewable energy sectors.
The meeting underscored the enduring ties between the two nations and highlighted new cooperation opportunities. Key discussion points included: expanding collaboration in hydrocarbons exploration activities and field development. Under energy, focus areas included solar energy, hydrogen development, energy storage, and seawater desalination.
Mining potential
They also discussed opportunities in rare minerals and rare earth elements, as well as Algeria’s ambitious mining projects aimed at driving economic growth. Boasting world-class deposits of phosphate, iron ore, zinc, lead and gold, Algeria represents a strategic opportunity for mining companies as global demand for critical minerals grows. With estimated resources of 2.2 billion tons, Algeria serves as one of the world’s most phosphate-rich countries.
Minister Arkab emphasized the importance of Japanese involvement in Algeria’s strategic development programs, particularly in transferring knowledge, advancing technology, and supporting local manufacturing. He highlighted the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for investment in these sectors.
Ambassador Kotaro expressed Japan’s strong interest in investing in Algeria, praising its favorable investment climate and the abundant opportunities available. He reaffirmed Japan’s readiness to strengthen cooperation in hydrocarbons, mining, and renewable energy, aiming for mutual benefit.
