Akobo Minerals enables first stoping at Segele Mine

Akobo Minerals has enabled first stoping activities at the Segele Mine in Ethiopia. The move follows completion of crosscut that connects the Western and Eastern tunnels.

This crosscut not only connects the two tunnels but also improves mine safety by providing a secondary exit, optimizes ventilation and logistics, and signifies the transition from mine development to the stoping phase.

Stoping process

Stoping, a core process in underground mining, involves the systematic removal of ore from inclined openings (stopes) within the orebody. The newly completed crosscut is strategically positioned between the Trial Stope and Stope 01, offering Akobo Minerals the flexibility to explore both areas simultaneously rather than sequentially. This approach could allow the prioritization of Stope 01, which contains the richest portion of the orebody.

These developments mark significant progress in the company’s operations at Segele, demonstrating Akobo Minerals’ commitment to efficient and safe mining practices while unlocking the full potential of the mine.

The Segele Gold Project is a high-grade gold mine located in the southern part of Ethiopia, within the country’s Arabian-Nubian Shield, which is known for hosting several gold deposits. The Segele mine is operated by Akobo Minerals, a Norway-based gold exploration and mining company focused on projects in Ethiopia. Akobo Minerals began small-scale mining operations in recent years and has been advancing towards large-scale production. The company has been focused on both exploration and developing its mining capabilities to bring the project into full production.
