Accident occur at a Malian gold mine

A tragic accident has occurred at a Malian gold mine. Oumar Sidibe, an official for gold miners in the southwestern town of Kangaba, as well as a local councillor, confirmed the report and said the accident which resulted in the deaths of more than 70 individuals, occurred after a tunnel collapsed.
This incident occurred in a region prone to mining accidents, reflecting the hazardous conditions in which miners work. Artisanal gold mining, characterized by small-scale operations often lacking proper safety measures, contributes to the risks faced by miners. Authorities struggle to regulate and control these operations effectively.
“It started with a noise. The earth started to shake. There were over 200 gold miners in the field and 73 bodies were recovered,” said Sidibe.

The Malian government expressed condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols at mining sites. Despite efforts to enhance regulations, mining accidents continue to occur.
Gold mining plays a significant role in Mali’s economy, contributing to a substantial portion of the national budget, export earnings, and GDP. Despite the presence of large foreign mining companies, artisanal gold mining remains prevalent, attracting thousands of miners. This sector’s persistence highlights the challenges of regulating informal mining activities.
Since 2020, Mali’s military leaders have aimed to strengthen sovereignty and increase the country’s benefits from its natural resources, including gold. This includes adopting a new mining code to ensure the state’s involvement in mining projects.
