Michelin highlights smart, safe, and sustainable mining solutions at Mining Indaba 2025

Michelin Mining has wrapped up a successful presence at Mining Indaba 2025, where the company’s vision for smart, safe, and sustainable mining took centre stage. The event, held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), brought together industry leaders and innovators to explore the future of mining through technology and collaboration.

Hein Venter, Michelin’s B2B Off Sales Director for Africa, India, and the Middle East, joined a panel discussion on Leveraging Data & AI for Workforce Optimisation. Venter shared insights into how mining operators can integrate data-driven strategies, and tools to optimise workforce management, improve safety, and enhance productivity. He stressed that in today’s mining environment, adopting data and AI-powered technologies not only supports operational goals but also addresses the critical need for sustainability and safety.

“Data-driven insights, with the development and integration of AI will see an expansion of the use of data for day-to-day productivity optimisation in the mining industry,” Venter notes. He highlights the growing importance of data literacy and analytics skills within mining teams, explaining how empowering employees with the tools and knowledge to act on real-time insights is crucial for success.

Data-driven solutions

To demonstrate these principles in action, Venter references solutions like MICHELIN MEMS 4, MICHELIN MEMS LITE, and MICHELIN BETTER HAUL ROAD, which enable operators to monitor and respond to fleet conditions efficiently. These data-driven solutions help improve mining and heavy equipment operations by reducing unscheduled downtime, enhancing safety, and lowering environmental impact. By continuously gathering and analysing tyre and haul road data, they support proactive maintenance, reducing the risk of unexpected failures and costly interruptions.

They also contribute to safer working conditions by helping operators maintain optimal tyre performance and road quality, reducing the likelihood of accidents. Additionally, by helping improve fuel efficiency and extend tyre life, they support more sustainable operations by minimizing waste and lowering emissions.

Ashutosh Jha, Marketing Director for Michelin Mining, adds that fostering collaboration and innovation across the industry is key to tackling mining challenges. “The combination of data, AI, and practical solutions can help operators achieve safer, more efficient operations while addressing environmental considerations. It’s about finding smarter ways to work while creating a positive impact on the industry.”

Michelin remains committed to working closely with mining operators to address their evolving needs. By focusing on innovation, safety, and sustainability, Michelin aims to help the mining sector navigate its challenges while ensuring progress toward a more efficient and sustainable future.
